In the framework of the co-operation initiated between Tunisia and the Council of Europe to “Promote and consolidate women’s rights through adaptation of the legislative framework and the increasing of their participation in public and political life, particularly in decision-making spheres”, the Council of Europe has co-organised with the Tunisian Ministry of Women, Family and Children and the Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment, a conference entitled “Women and Local Government” on 26-27 September 2017.
This conference allowed different stakeholders (national and local authorities, parliamentarians, civil society representatives, the media, academics, etc.) to exchange and reflect on the means, practices and challenges in strengthening women’s participation to local power. Opening the Conference, the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe recalled that “engaging all members in society and ensuring the participation of women is a fundamental requirement”.
