The Council of Europe provided grants to Ukrainian civic organisations to combat violence against women

The Council of Europe project “Combating Violence against Women in Ukraine – Phase II” (COVAW-II) successfully supported three Ukrainian civil society organisations in awareness raising based on the CoE/WAVE/UN Women methodology.

All three initiatives, successfully completed in October 2024, were focused on preventing and combating violence against women in Ukraine, within the context of the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine.

  • The Centre of Women's Perspectives improved response to domestic violence in military veterans' families through 3-day trainings entitled, “Improving the response to cases of domestic violence in the families of military personnel in the Lviv region taking into account the standards of the Istanbul Convention and changes to legislation adopted in 2024”. Two trainings brought together 48 participants working directly with the victims of domestic violence to increase their awareness on Istanbul Convention standards and preventive intervention measures, engaging active military servicepeople and veterans to discuss recent changes in Ukrainian legislation on domestic violence that came into force on 19 December 2024.
  • The NGO “Ukrainian Association of Women in Law Enforcement (UAWLE)” worked on enhancing awareness regarding requirements of the Istanbul Convention, focusing on psychological aspects of prevention and early detection of domestic violence in families of Ukrainian law enforcement officers during the war and post-war recovery.  The analysis of promising practices on officer-involved domestic violence has been conducted and presented to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the National Police of Ukraine.

Small grants were awarded to further support the crucial work of these women’s rights organisations within the framework of the Council of Europe project “Combating Violence against Women in Ukraine – Phase II” (COVAW-II).
