First meeting of partners of the Council of Europe project in Kosovo* (Phase III)

On 26 October 2021, the first Steering Committee meeting of the project “Reinforcing the Fight against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence in Kosovo*- Phase III”, took place in Pristina. The project started 1 July 2021 and will run until 28 February 2023.

The opening remarks were presented by Frank Power, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Pristina and Nazlie Bala, Legal Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Justice/National Coordinator on Domestic Violence. Marta Becerra, the Head of Co-operation Unit at the Gender Equality Division of the Council of Europe presented on the achieved results and way forward for phase III. In particular, the Council of Europe underlined the importance of the upcoming assessment of Kosovo* compliance with the Istanbul Convention to be conducted by the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (GREVIO) as part of the project phase III.

Project partners include the Office of the Deputy Minister of Justice/National Coordinator on Domestic Violence (Nazile Bala, Legal Advisor), the Ombudsperson (Naim Qelaj), the Head of the Agency for Gender Equality (Edi Gusia), the Head of Justice Academy (Enver Fejzullahu), the Head of Social Services Division, Ministry of Finance (Adile Shaqiri) and the Director of the Victims Advocacy and Assistance Office (Basri Kastrati).

The members of the Steering Committee acknowledged the project results achieved in phase II and appreciated and committed to continue the joint work to increase capacities of the legal professionals to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence (VAW/DV) and to raise awareness against it, and the support to improve the standards for social services for victims of VAW and DV and for perpetrator programmes.

The next project Steering Committee meeting will take place in June 2022.
