Advancing gender-responsive education in Armenian schools and preschools

Lasting classroom change takes practice and a chance to learn from one another. 40 school mentor teachers and preschool representatives came together at the Council of Europe conference “Gender-Responsive Education: From Experience to Sustainable Practice” to share ideas about gender-responsive education.

The conference, which took place in Yerevan on 9 October, was a follow up of a two-day online training in August 2026 for 63 preschool professionals. The training used a Council of Europe module for early childhood education to help participants recognise gender stereotypes in daily practice. After the training, the assessment showed that the number of participants who recognised gender stereotypes in educational materials increased from 30% before the training to 82% after the training.

At the conference, participants discussed about putting gender-responsive approaches into practice—from choosing toys and learning materials to challenging expectations about girls’ and boys’ behaviour. They shared experiences and practical ideas to take back to their schools and preschools.

A school mentor teacher from Yerevan reflected: “I realised how much gender stereotypes had influenced my own choices and what I brought into the classroom. I now make a conscious effort to challenge them, including when discussing professions with children. Through women writers, scientists, activist and other role models, I want children to see that their opportunities should not be limited by gender and that they can develop their full potential.”

A preschool representative emphasised the need for ongoing support: “Change needs to begin in the preschool years, but it cannot end with a training session. We need opportunities to exchange experiences, practical tools for everyday work and ways to assess progress.”

The conference encouraged schools and preschools to keep working together so every child can participate, explore and develop their potential.

The conference was organised as part of the Council of Europe implemented project “Ending violence against women and promoting gender equality in Armenia” Phase II under the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia 2023-2026.
