On 29 April 2026, education stakeholders from across Europe gathered at the Council of Europe premises in Strasbourg for a Workshop on Open School Data (OSD). Organised in partnership with UNESCO’s International Institute for Educational Planning (IIEP-UNESCO), the event focused on practical approaches, capacity building, and exchange, while exploring key innovations and policy challenges in education systems.
Discussions were informed by insights from the ETINED report ‘Open School Data in European Education Systems’, providing a shared foundation for examining how open data can strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity in education.
Participants engaged in a series of discussions examining the broader implications of open school data. Central questions included how OSD can foster trust among stakeholders create new opportunities for research, and the role of representative institutions in supporting data use and public understanding.
Participants highlighted the need for more structured cooperation between public authorities, schools, and stakeholder organisations, as well as clearer guidance on how data should be interpreted and communicated. Strengthening data literacy and ensuring that information is accessible and meaningful were identified as key priorities for making open school data more effective in practice.
The workshop closed with an emphasis on the importance of continuing exchange and mutual learning, and on translating discussions into concrete actions to improve how open school data is collected, shared, and used across education systems.
