Fourteen initiatives of civil society associations, active on the ground in the reception and support of refugees and migrants, have just been launched for the dissemination of the Council of Europe toolkit "Language support for adult refugees" in several member countries such as Greece, Italy, United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Albania, Serbia and Turkey.
These initiatives will focus on the translation and/or adaptation of the toolkit to the local/national context, training of volunteers/teachers of language courses for refugees and migrants, of social services interpreters, of other associations and NGOs as well as of local authorities involved in the reception and linguistic and civic support of refugees, creation of communication and visibility tools, etc.
The toolkit was developed by the Education Policy Division as part of its project "Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants (LIAM)" with a view to providing practical and free support to (inter)national and local bodies and organisations - and in particular to their volunteers- to provide language support to adult refugees and migrants in order to facilitate the acquisition of basic skills and communication in the language or languages of the host country.
The toolbox is available in 7 languages and the tools can be adapted by users to fit best to various purposes and beneficiaries (www.coe.int/lang-refugees).
