A webinar on plagiarism detection took place on 17 March 2021 and it gathered around 110 participants from one public and three private universities, mostly members of ethical bodies and the student population.

The interpreting of results of text-matching software was discussed, in particular the limits, the interest, the type of information provided, the risks of misinterpretation (false positive and false negative results), the increased sophistication of these tools, and special cases such as translation or paraphrasing.

An experienced plagiarism researcher from the Swiss Institute of Research and Action on Fraud and Plagiarism in Academia gave an interesting presentation of real-life cases and lessons learnt which could be of use, in particular for Montenegrin academic ethical bodies. Participants were interested in practical concerns that may arise in investigating concrete plagiarism cases. The webinar is a part of a training programme that is being delivered to the universities’ ethical boards members.

The event was organised within the framework of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022” and its action on “Quality education for all” in Montenegro.
