Today, 18 October 2023, Ambassador Gilberto Jerónimo, Permanent Representative of Portugal to the Council of Europe deposited the instrument of ratification of the Amending Protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data (CETS No. 223), in the presence of the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
Portugal, who has been Party to Convention 108 since 1994, thus becomes the 29th State Party to ratify the modernised Convention 108 (Convention 108+).
With Portugal joining Convention 108+, this landmark instrument comes closer to its entry into force. As a reminder, the minimum threshold to enter into force is 38 ratifications, and only this year, Convention 108+ has seen nine Parties joining it. Portugal’s commitment demonstrates the importance of the his unique instrument, which remains the only global international legally binding instrument protecting personal data and the right to privacy, aims at ensuring appropriate protection of all individuals in an ever-expanding digital era, in order to safeguard the respect for dignity and privacy of all and to fully enjoy the right to informational self-determination.
