As part of this effort, Council of Europe organised a two-day training for trainers (ToT) in the EU law, for 10 trainers of the NIJ.

Head of Council of Europe Office in Chisinau, Falk Lange, underlined the importance of this training since Republic of Moldova was granted the status of candidate country to the European Union.

"The aspirations of the Republic of Moldova are very clear, but at the same time their accomplishment requires a long-term, responsible and challenging process involving all state institutions, including through proper application of the European Union law by the judges and prosecutors. In this context, the training in European Union Law is a very important one for the Republic of Moldova at this moment,” noted Falk Lange.

"The European dimension of judicial training is no longer just an additional component, but is becoming a central element of professional training in the field of justice. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce and strengthen a module on EU law for the beneficiaries of the National Institute of Justice", emphasized Adrian Cerbu, the Director ad interim of the NIJ.

The ToT was developed and delivered by the consultant of the Council of Europe, Razvan Horatiu Radu, Prosecutor at the Prosecutor's Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice. During the two-day training, the NIJ trainers developed their knowledge about the EU institutions, with a stronger focus on the Court of Justice of the EU (CJEU), its areas of competences and relation with the national courts.

The dedicated sessions also covered topics such as the protection of fundamental human rights in the EU, the correlation between the CJEU and the European Court of Human Rights, and many more.

The ToT was organised within the framework of the joint project of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Support to the Justice Reform in the Republic of Moldova".
