The Chair of the Council of Europe Steering Committee on New and Emerging Digital Technologies (CDNET), Mario Hernández Ramos, participated in the session “AI & Human Rights: Managing Risks and Seizing Opportunities” at the UN Business and Human Rights Regional Forum for Western Europe in Strasbourg on 17 September. 

The session brought together representatives of the Council of Europe, business, the International Labour Organization and civil society to discuss how artificial intelligence is affecting human rights in practice. The panellists considered issues including equality, privacy, access to remedy, algorithmic management, disability inclusion and meaningful stakeholder engagement. 

The discussion focused on turning human rights standards into practical action, and how existing international and European frameworks can help businesses identify and manage AI-related human rights risks including through the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law and HUDERIA.
