We are a team of 16 people, working on a variety of cooperation programmes that support Georgia in upholding and promoting the Council of Europe standards of democracy, human rights and rule of law.

The Council of Europe is the continent’s leading human rights organization, with 47 member states, including all 28 EU countries. All our member states are party to the European Convention on Human Rights, which is the cornerstone of human rights protection in Europe.

Georgia became the 41^st member state of the Council of Europe in 1999, an historic step best remembered when the Prime Minister at the time, Mr Zurab Zhvania, at the Parliamentary Assembly, declared on behalf of the Georgian people: “I am Georgian and therefore I am European”.

The Council of Europe’s action in Georgia covers a range of cooperation activities and mechanisms that evaluate Georgia’s progress in fulfilling the standards of the organization.

The Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2016-2019 focuses on protecting and promoting human rights, including social rights; ensuring justice, strengthening democratic governance, as well as developing confidence-building measures and countering corruption, money-laundering, cybercrime and manipulation of sports competitions.
