TRES: Project on strengthening and protecting women's and children's rights in Ukraine

Start-up Conference  (Kyiv, 4 December 2008)

The Start-up Conference of the TRES Project took place in the premises of the Ministry of Justice in Kyiv and was attended by 60 participants.

It was opened by Ms Ella Lamakh (Ministry for Family, Youth and Sport), Ms Laura Garagnani (European Commission) and Mr Ake Peterson (Council of Europe).

During the Conference, Ms Dorota Pudzianowska, Expert, and Mr Bruno Romazzotti, TRES Long-term Adviser, exposed the importance of the Council of Europe Conventions on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings and on Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. Official representatives from the Ministry for Family, Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Supreme Court, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament), the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Commissioner for Human Rights Office, Embassies, UNICEF, ILO, UNDP and relevant NGOs were also in attendance.

The Conference achieved its purpose insofar as the audience is aware of the project, the partner institutions have a full understanding of their responsibilities in the implementation of the project and the public has been alerted to the problem of women’s and children’s rights.

Prior to the Start-up Conference, the TRES Steering Committee held its first meeting during which the work plan of the project was adopted.
