Study session to empower young Roma women at the European Youth Centre Budapest

The European Youth Centre Budapest is hosting the study session “Empowering Young Roma Women” from 24 to 28 November 2025, organised in co-operation with Human Rights in Action (EN-HRA). The event brings together young people and youth organisations working to advance the rights and inclusion of Roma communities across Europe.

The study session focuses on the challenges young Roma women face, including discrimination, racism, antigypsyism, sexism and other forms of exclusion. Through non-formal education methods, participants explore how to strengthen civic participation, human rights activism and inclusive youth work practices.

Throughout the programme, participants learn to use youth work tools to challenge discrimination and to design inclusive initiatives for and with young Romani women. The study session also aims to build stronger European youth networks by fostering co-operation between Roma and non-Roma young people, developing leadership skills, and support participants to act as multipliers who promote inclusive, participatory activities in their communities.

A particular focus is placed on understanding the gender dimension of Roma exclusion. Participants learn about the Council of Europe’s standards and approaches, including good practices for awareness-raising, supporting Roma women’s participation, and addressing gender-based violence, with input provided by the Council of Europe Roma and Travellers Division.

The study session also offers space to engage with experts working on grassroots issues. Their contributions enrich discussions on combating antigypsyism, promoting equality, and supporting the democratic participation of Roma women and girls.

The study session contributes to the Council of Europe’s efforts to build more inclusive and democratic societies where Roma communities, and especially women and girls, enjoy equal access to rights, opportunities and services.
