Improving implementation of financial sanctions to counter terrorism financing in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Strengthening the implementation of targeted financial sanctions in Bosnia and Herzegovina was the focus of a workshop held on Igman on 30-31 March, bringing together representatives of key institutions involved in this area.

Participants reviewed how responsibilities, procedures and co-ordination mechanisms related to targeted financial sanctions are currently organised in Bosnia and Herzegovina. They discussed practical challenges, clarified institutional roles, and contributed to identifying solutions to improve the overall effectiveness and co-ordination of the system.

The workshop also provided an overview of relevant international standards, including United Nations Security Council obligations and recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), as well as examples of how other countries apply these measures in practice.

Discussions were based on a technical report prepared by a Council of Europe expert, which maps how Bosnia and Herzegovina implements targeted financial sanctions in line with international requirements. The report analyses existing institutional arrangements and identifies areas where further legal or practical improvements may be needed.

By strengthening understanding and co-operation among institutions, these efforts support more effective implementation of targeted financial sanctions, contributing to countering the financing of terrorism in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The workshop was held as part of the Council of Europe’s Action against corruption and economic crime in Bosnia and Herzegovina, implemented under the Council of Europe’s Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina 2026-2029 and funded through voluntary contributions.
