On 29 May 2018 in Skopje a final event has been organised to close the successful implementation of the project activities and achieving tangible results which aim at supporting judicial capacity to better safeguard human rights and combat ill-treatment and impunity.
This project succeeded in enhancing:
- Capacities of the Academy for judges and prosecutors related to human rights trainings
- Capacities of the judiciary to apply and interpret ECtHR standards on specific human rights topic, including fight against ill treatment and impunity
- Capacities of the Constitutional Court to more effectively apply European human rights standards to individual complaints
Representatives of the main partners, Academy of Judges and Prosecutors and the Constitutional Court, as well as representatives from the judiciary, state institutions, civil society, bar associations and international community attended the event.
Mr Nikola Ivanovski, President of the Constitutional Court, Ms Aneta Arnaudovska, Director of the Academy of Judges and Prosecutors, Ms Annabelle Regal, Representative of the Delegation of the European Union and Ms Elena Jovanovska Brezoska, Representative of the Council of Europe had opening speeches sharing the project’s results, positive experience, challenges and stressing the need for continued cooperation in this field. Mr Simeon Petrovski, Senior Lawyer from the European Court of Human Rights (the Court) and Ms Danica Djonova, Director of the Bureau for Representation in front of the Court emphasised the need to protect and to better safeguard human rights at national level and prevent violations before the Court. They gave overview and impact of the most relevant case-law of the Court in relation to fairness of the proceedings, rights to liberty and security and prohibition of torture and ill treatment. The event ended with sharing experiences and lessons learned directly from the judges and the prosecutors who have participated in the project’s activities.
This activity was organised within the Project “Increasing judicial capacity to safeguard human rights and combat ill-treatment and impunity”, as part of the “Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey”.
