Meeting with a delegation from the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine

On 21 May 2026, the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (DEJ) met with representatives of the International Cooperation Department of the Office of the Prosecutor General (OPG) of Ukraine. The meeting took place in the margins of the 89th session of the Committee of Experts on the Operation of European Conventions on Co-operation in Criminal Matters (PC-OC), where the Ukrainian delegation participated as part of the ongoing cooperation project, “Fostering Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System in Ukraine – Phase II”.

The discussion focused on the issues related to the execution of European Court of Human Rights judgments concerning Ukraine. It was noted that that Ukraine currently has approximately 940 judgments pending execution, of which 55 are leading cases under enhanced supervision revealing complex and structural problems, including the independence of the prosecution service, effectiveness of investigations into ill-treatment and torture, domestic violence, hate crimes, and crimes against journalists.

In conclusion, the meeting underscored the central role of the execution of the European Court’s judgments in advancing human rights protection and the rule of law in Ukraine. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustained and structured engagement to this end, recognising that the full and effective execution of the Court's judgments remains indispensable not only for the protection of individual rights, but also for Ukraine's broader European integration agenda.
