Training for staff of the Protector of Citizens of Serbia on better monitoring the implementation of the European Social Charter in Serbia and reporting to the European Committee of Social Rights

The office of the Protector of Citizens of Serbia organised on 3 October 2022 a training for its staff on how to effectively monitor the implementation of the Revised European Social Charter at national level and how to engage with the European Committee of Social Rights under the reporting procedure of the Charter.

Participants had the opportunity to get familiar with the Revised European Social Charter, the work of the European Committee of Social Rights, the reporting and collective complaints procedures and with the possibilities these mechanisms offer to strengthen the implementation of social and economic rights at national level. Participants also received first-hand information from the Slovak National Centre for Human Rights and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission on how to ensure quality reporting to the European Committee of Social Rights and on the benefits of reporting for National Human Rights Institutions and National Equality Bodies.

Most participants were investigators of the office of the Protector of Citizens, dealing with complaints relating to gender equality, persons with disabilities and elderly rights, health, children’s rights, finances, economy and property rights. In addition, the training was attended by project officers and people working on reporting and with the media.

The training was open by Jelena Stojanović, Deputy Protector of Citizens for Gender Equality and Nadia Ćuk, Deputy Head of Office of the Council of Europe Office in Serbia. It was organised in the framework of the project on social rights of older women in rural areas, implemented by the Protector of Citizens as part of the activities of the COE-FRA-ENNHRI-EQUINET Platform on Social and Economic Rights. This activity is entirely funded by the Council of Europe.
