A new factsheet was launched today on the protection of Romani language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
Romani enjoys varying levels of protection in 16 of the 25 states that have ratified the Charter. The factsheet presents recommendations on promoting Romani and identifies challenges in different states parties.
The Committee of Experts encourages the adoption of comprehensive strategies for promoting Romani, including the improvement of teacher training and of the Romani-language media offer, as well as ensuring sustainable funding for its support.
By presenting key findings, concerns and recommended actions, the factsheet aims to support stronger action to promote Romani and integrate it more fully into public life emphasising that linguistic diversity is part of Europe’s cultural heritage.
The factsheet is also available in Romani.
