Secretary General Alain Berset to undertake first official visit to the Republic of Moldova

Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset will pay his first official visit to Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, since taking office, from 12 to 13 February.

This visit underscores the Council of Europe’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Republic of Moldova and will also serve as the occasion for the official launch of the new Action Plan for the country for 2025-2028.

During his visit, Secretary General Berset will hold meetings with President Maia Sandu, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, and Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu, as well as with representatives from civil society and the judiciary. These discussions will focus on key priorities, including human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The Secretary General will also use this opportunity to engage with students from State University in a discussion on the crucial issue of ”Disinformation – a Threat to European Democracy”.

As part of the visit, the official launch of the Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova (2025-2028) will take place on 12 February at 15:00 at the Radisson Convention Center. The event will begin with opening remarks from Secretary General Berset and President Sandu, followed by two panel discussions addressing the Council of Europe’s core pillars.

The launch event will be open to the press, with an opportunity for journalists to pose a limited number of questions to the Secretary General and President Sandu following the official opening.
