Over 130 representatives from civil society organisations, bar associations, municipalities, public institutions, and international partners came together for the launch of the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme, “Fostering Civil Society Participation and Capacity Building in Access to Justice in Türkiye”. The programme focuses on areas where access to justice is both crucial and timely: migration, the environment, and women’s rights.
Participants highlighted the vital role civil society plays in advancing access to justice, acting as a bridge between communities and justice institutions. By providing legal assistance, raising awareness, advocating for policy reform, and monitoring the implementation of laws and policies, these organisations empower individuals and groups most at risk of marginalisation and exclusion. Yet, civil society itself faces persistent challenges, including shrinking civic space, limited resources, and barriers to sustainability.
To address these growing needs, the newly launched programme aims not only to strengthen institutional capacities but also to build bridges between policy and practice, between human rights standards and local realities, between those who provide justice and those who seek it. It offers grants, capacity-building and awareness-raising activities, coordination meetings, practical tools, and international events, all designed to equip civil society with the resources, knowledge, and partnerships needed to make a difference in people’s lives.
Access to justice is more than a legal concept, it is about people feeling heard, protected, and confident in claiming their rights. The launch conference marks the beginning of a shared journey, bringing diverse groups together to develop solutions and ensure that justice is not only guaranteed in theory, but is truly accessible in practice for all in Türkiye.
The “Fostering Civil Society Participation and Capacity Building in Access to Justice in Türkiye” Programme is co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
