Updated factsheet on environment and climate change now available

The Council of Europe’s Department for the Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights has published an updated factsheet on environment and climate change.

The updated factsheet presents recent developments in the Court’s case law concerning environmental protection, access to environmental information and remedies, the effects of environmental risks on the enjoyment of Convention rights, and issues linked to climate change. It also incorporates the latest information submitted in the context of the execution of these judgments, illustrating the legislative, administrative and practical measures taken by member states to address the violations identified by the Court.

The purpose of the revised factsheet is to provide a clear and accessible overview of how environmental and climate-related challenges are addressed within the Convention system, and to highlight examples of progress noted by the Committee of Ministers in its supervision of execution. This includes instances where supervision has been closed following the adoption of adequate measures, as well as situations where important steps towards full compliance have been recognised by the Committee.

This is the most recent in a series of thematic factsheets on developments in national law, policy and practice across Europe linked to the implementation of the European Court’s judgments. Other factsheets cover issues including the role of local and regional authorities, children’s rights, domestic violence, freedom of expression, the rights of persons with mental health conditions or physical disabilities, and data protection.
