Journalism Excellence Awards - Ethical reporting on Roma and Travellers and fight against racism and antigypsyism through the media

The Journalism Excellence Awards are organised within the framework of the Council of Europe`s Strategic Action Plan for Roma and Traveller Inclusion (2020 - 2025), and as a follow-up to the Awards launched in 2024 within the Joint EU-CoE EQUIROM Programme.

The Awards aim to promote a positive image in the media or raise awareness on specific issues affecting Roma and Traveller communities in Europe. Besides other transversal topics, a special award will focus on ethical reporting on Roma and Traveller history education and remembrance. This year a special award will be granted.

We are launching a call for applications from the media sphere (print media, TV media, photographers, reporters, journalists, etc.) in all the Council of Europe (CoE) member States. Within Joint “Roma Integration Phase III” Prorgamme, applications from Western Balkans and Türkiye are particularly encouraged.

Five categories will be evaluated and awarded a prize of €2000 at the Awards ceremony to be held in Strasbourg on 18 June 2025, during the 2025 No Hate Speech Week:

  • Photojournalism Award
  • Investigative Journalism Award
  • Interview Award
  • Roma history and Holocaust remembrance Award
  • Young Journalists Award

For more information or to apply, please consult the following links: regulations and application form. The details of the categories and selection criteria are described in the regulations (art. 4 and 7).

The application form must be returned in English only and the journalistic material must be accompanied by an English translation or at least a good quality English summary.

Deadline for applications is extended: 30 April 2025.
