Atrás Webinar on human rights of intersex people

Webinar on human rights of intersex people

The Council of Europe’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Unit is to mark Pride week on June 30th with an in-depth webinar on the human rights of intersex people, its first on the theme since its mandate was extended to include them, earlier this year.

Discussions will focus on a study commissioned by the Finnish Justice and Foreign Ministries that investigates how decisions and treatments for intersex children from birth to adolescence have affected their lives down the line. It will also hear about the experiences of parents of intersex children in Finland’s healthcare system and in Finnish society.

Study author Tikli Oikarinen is a panellist, and the meeting will be opened by Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner Dunja Mijatović and Finnish Minister for Nordic Cooperation and Equality Thomas Blomqvist. The webinar, which is open to the public, will also look at what has been done to date to ensure the rights of the estimated 0.02% to 1.7% of intersex people in member states, and what needs to be done for them in the future.
