The Privacy Symposium 2023 puts Convention 108+ in the limelight

The first day of the Symposium, hosted by the University of Ca'Foscari in Venice, included a programme dedicated to Convention 108+. It gathered high-level participants, international, regional and national political representatives as well as data protection authorities and notably Ms Nataša Pirc Musar, President of Slovenia and Mr Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The Convention 108+ track aimed to discuss the relevance, impact and opportunities of the Convention and its protocol (CETS. 223) on the path to enter into force during key sessions on:

  • Opening on Convention 108+ opportunity and paradigm shift
  • Convention 108+ impact on adequacy decisions and data transfers (GPA, EU and T-PD)
  • Convention 108+ Ratification Process and relevance for democratic countries
  • Lessons learned and advice from ratifying countries

It’s this event that Argentina chose to deposit its instrument of ratification of Convention 108+. It is thus the 23rd state having ratified.

The Privacy Symposium is an international conference aimed at facilitating dialogue, cooperation and convergence among experts, academics and data protection authorities all over the globe. The 2023 edition of the Privacy Symposium, patronised by the Italian Data Protection Authority – Il Garante, took place from 17 to 21 April in Venice, Italy. It hosted over 200 top-level speakers in more than 80 sessions divided into different thematic tracks of sessions on data protection, such as on international cooperation; technology and compliance; socio-economic perspectives and research and innovation.
