Secretary General Jagland discusses media freedom in Turkey with international journalist associations

Representatives of the eight partner organisations of the Council of Europe Platform for the Safety of Journalists met with the Council of Europe´s Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland, to discuss the possible follow up to the media freedom alerts published on the Platform with regard to Turkey in the aftermath of the 15 July failed coup. The Secretary General briefed them on the Council of Europe actions so far and on-going co-operation with Turkey, as a member state of the organisation.

After the meeting, Secretary General Jagland said: “We have had a good exchange. The partners have expressed their concern with the situation in Turkey, but confirmed their support for the Platform as an opportunity for constructive dialogue on media threats. We will continue this dialogue”.

The Platform is a public space, allowing the European associations of journalists and international NGOs active in the field of the freedom of expression to alert the Council of Europe on violations to media freedom in Europe. Its objective is to better address media threats and violence against journalists and foster early warning mechanisms and response capacity within the Council of Europe.

The partners of the Platform are the European Federation of Journalists, International Federation of Journalists, Association of European Journalists, Article 19, Reporters without Borders, The Committee to Protect Journalists, Index on Censorship and the International Press Institute.
