HIV prevention and drug treatment in European prisons: training in Ukraine

The Council of Europe's Pompidou Group drug policy experts are holding a workshop and an executive training on drug treatment and HIV prevention in prisons in Kyiv Oblast from 5 to 9 November.

Ukraine’s 40% increase in annual new HIV infections from 9,500 in 2010 to 15,680 in 2017 is especially pronounced in prisons and among people who inject drugs. From opiate substitution treatments to overdose prevention by way of other forms of training to reduce the spread of HIV in prisons, four European prison and drug treatment experts will share good practices and exchange experiences with Ukrainian prison officials on ways to improve the situation.

The training will examine the drug situation and HIV prevention programmes in European prisons, existing responses and good practices in Ukraine, as well as experiences of countries including Slovenia, Israel, Germany and Moldova in substitution maintenance treatment, harm reduction and drug-free treatment.
