High-Level Conference in Chisinau to reinforce commitment to European Social Rights

Ministers and senior representatives from Council of Europe member states are gathering today in Chisinau for a High-Level Conference on Social Rights, reaffirming their commitment to the European Social Charter.

Building on the 2023 Council of Europe Summit and the Reykjavik Declaration, states will pledge to expand social protections, tackle emerging challenges, and strengthen the Charter’s monitoring mechanisms - sending a clear signal that social justice remains central to democratic stability and European solidarity.

Discussions will examine the contribution of social rights to democratic stability and security, efforts to reduce inequality, and the prevention of democratic backsliding, including in the context of the New Democratic Pact for Europe. Participants will also address key challenges linked to the future of work, particularly those arising from technological change. Ministers are expected to discuss pressing issues such as inequality, poverty, and protection of vulnerable groups, while emphasising the essential role of the Charter in holding governments accountable.

The conference will conclude with a forward-looking political declaration, setting priorities for future action and reinforcing Europe’s shared dedication to promoting social rights for all citizens.
