Council of Europe participation at the event “Conversation on 25 Years of National Minority Rights in Sweden – and the Way Forward!”

On 23 October 2025 afternoon, a representative of the National Minorities and Minority Languages Division of the Council of Europe participated and delivered a speech at the “Conversation on 25 Years of National Minority Rights in Sweden – and the Way Forward!”, an event organised by Lars Arrhenius, the Swedish Equality Ombudsman.

It has been indeed 25 years since Sweden ratified the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. To mark this anniversary, the Equality Ombudsman presented his new report "The Rights of National Minorities – Some Observations and Recommendations 25 Years after Sweden’s Ratification of the Council of Europe’s Minority Conventions" at the Finnish Institute in Stockholm.

About 100 participants joined the meeting, including representatives of the Swedish Equality Ombudsman, Government Offices and the five recognised national minorities, in particular youth (Sami, Jews, Roma, Sweden Finns and Tornedalians).
