Back Human rights: gender stereotypes and sexism

This training unit encourages teachers to think about human rights by exploring their practices, values and beliefs. Learners focus on analysing violence against women in the media and a critical exploration of the image of women as sexual objects. The awareness and critical reflection of the objectification of womens’ bodies in the media and the discussing of gender stereotypes helps learners to understand the bias we assimilate. This understanding is essential if we are to act for the prevention of discrimination, gender inequality and the infringement of Human Rights.

The training unit fosters the critical analysis of social practices of gender stereotyping through the language we use and role models we follow.

This unit is designed to be used by in-service and pre-service secondary school teachers. The resource is based on the cooperative methodology and includes such techniques as word rotation, placement, as well as moderated debates and whole group discussion.
