Back How to use literature to prevent discrimination

This resource introduces concepts and ideas of how to use literature to stimulate a discussion about discrimination. The materials used in this unit enables teachers and learners to change perspective. The experience of moving to, and living in, a different country, seen through the eyes of a story’s protagonist offers learners a chance to change perspective and identify with a fictional character. The unit aims to create feelings of empathy in the readers in order to allow them to move between different points of view and perspectives. The unit uses individual and pair work, discussions, presentations and creative writing methods.

This unit can be used for training future teachers, particularly teachers working with languages and literature, in preparation for dealing with discrimination and Human Rights issues, the expression of feelings and developing tolerance for oneself and for others in the classroom and beyond.
