Back Europe on-screen. Cinema and the teaching of history

This resource offers materials, methods and examples for the use of films in the teaching of 20th century European history. It contains fact sheets on 50 films that illustrate four main topics: nationalism, women, immigration and human rights.

The resource approaches 20th century film as a specific type of historical record for European society which has been neglected or even misused in history classrooms, all over Europe. This is due, primarily, to the lack of film studies training and materials on how to use films as a source in the history classroom.

This resource can be used during initial training as well as in-service training of history teachers working in secondary and upper-secondary schools. It is useful for those who are looking for materials on the use and teaching of film, in the context of 20th century history, as well as those who want to develop their skills in teaching their students to approach films from a critical perspective in the history classroom and beyond.
