10 NOVEMBER, 14.30-16.00

Representation of women varies across the different criminal justice domains involved in the fight against cybercrime. One area where women are typically underrepresented is the technical domains, including digital forensics, CERTs, and cybersecurity. This may reflect historical trends viewing these as typically male disciplines, as well as lower numbers of women pursuing so-called STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at school or university. As the development and deployment of new technologies, as well as the collection and use of electronic evidence, becomes an ever more important part of the arsenal of criminal justice actors fighting cybercrime, promoting the role of women in these technical domains is crucial.

This session will explore some of the obstacles preventing women from entering and progressing within the technical domains, and identify what both policymakers and practitioners can do to promote the role of women in these areas.
