The Multidisciplinary Group on Environment (GME) will hold its second meeting in Strasbourg, from 9 to 11 December 2024.

The Committee will adopt a compendium on Council of Europe’s activities on the environment and a report on the challenges faced by member states in this area. The Committee will consider a draft Strategy of the Council of Europe on Environment and in this respect, conduct hearings with representatives of international organisations, civil society, youth and children which will allow for an inclusive approach to the Strategy.

General Information on the GME

The GME was established by the Committee of Ministers on 17 May 2024, to develop a Council of Europe Strategy on the Environment. It forms part of the Reykjavík process aiming to make the environment a visible priority of the Organisation.

The GME brings together representatives from the Member States, various bodies and sectors of the Organisation, International organisations, as well as civil society, to ensure that the outcomes have a real and innovative impact.

  • The Council of Europe Strategy on the Environment: this will be the main deliverable of the GME, together with an Action Plan, and is aimed to strengthen the Council’s commitment to protecting human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the face of the triple planetary crisis of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss.
  • The Compendium of the Council of Europe on activities on the environment: This document contains the state of play of the Council of Europe’s ongoing and planned activities relating to the environment. The Compendium forms a basis for the elaboration of the Strategy and its Action Plan.
