Back Netherlands - NHRI submits communication on case concerning police detention

Corallo v. the Netherlands

The Netherlands Institute for Human Rights submitted to the Committee of Ministers a communication on the case of Corallo.

The case concerns the conditions of detention in the Philipsburg Police Station in Sint Maarten (Caribbean part of the Netherlands).

The Strasbourg Court held in October 2018 that the serious lack of space, taken together with other shortcomings which had earlier been identified by the CPT as totally inappropriate for holding remand prisoners, amounted to the applicant’s degrading treatment.

The authorities of the Netherlands have undertaken to provide the Committee of Ministers by 9 April with information on the measures taken or envisaged in response to the Court's judgment.
