1996 - Wansbeck District Council

The Wansbeck District Council townWansbeck was a former district in Northumberland, lying on the North Sea coast.  As England’s main coalmining region in the past, Northumberland contributed to the country’s industrial revolution, but nowadays information technology has taken over.  In the 1950s, the district was very successful in raising public awareness of the European ideal through its many activities involving twinnings, meetings at all levels and youth exchanges.  Over the years, Wansbeck built up an extensive network of European friendship and co-operation at municipal level through its twinnings with the German towns of Remscheid and Schalksmühle.
