Members of the Working Group on the European Space for Citizenship Education (ESCE) met in Strasbourg for their fifth meeting, continuing work on refining the draft ESCE framework and advancing the co-creation of a shared European vision for citizenship education.
Held concurrently with the Education Policy Advisors Network (EPAN) meeting, the discussions reinforced the importance of synergies across Council of Europe processes and stakeholders working to strengthen and innovate democracy through education. The meeting focused on consolidating the draft ESCE document, building on contributions gathered through international conferences, discussions within EPAN and the Steering Committee for Education (CDEDU), as well as a final round of comments provided by leading European experts in the field.
Participants further developed key components of the initiative, including the principles for Education for Democratic Citizenship (EDC), the Quality Framework, and future co-operation mechanisms designed to support implementation and exchange across member states.
As work progresses ahead of the 27th Session of the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education, to be held later this year in Montenegro, the meeting reaffirmed the Council of Europe’s commitment to advancing citizenship education as a cornerstone of democratic culture across Europe.
