The Council of Europe hosts landmark 5th session of the Education Steering Committee CDEDU: Presentation of the Education for Democracy Programme 2024-2027.

The Council of Europe's Steering Committee for Education (CDEDE) will hold its 5th plenary session at the Palais de l'Europe in Strasbourg from 20 to 22 March 2024. This session marks an important milestone, as it will launch the ambitious "Education for Democracy" programme for the period 2024-2027.

At a time of profound challenges to democracy, human rights and the rule of law, the Council of Europe remains committed to strengthening democratic values in all its member states. The programme, inspired by the high-level directives of the Fourth Summit of Heads of State and Government in Reykjavik last May, aims to counter democratic backsliding and improve educational frameworks to foster a culture of democracy and respect for human rights.

The programme is based on a detailed analysis of current threats to democratic stability, such as rising nationalism, extremism and digital misinformation. It addresses the urgent need to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and values to participate actively in democratic life. The programme prioritises inclusiveness, non-discrimination, transparency and accountability, reflecting the core principles of the Council of Europe.

Significant efforts will be made to revitalise the democratic mission of education, to strengthen social responsibility within educational structures and to adopt a human rights-based approach to the digital transformation of education. The programme aims to develop adaptable curricula, promote learner autonomy, support professional development of educators and ensure safe and inclusive learning environments.

The 5th Plenary Session of the CDEDU will provide a platform for Member States to discuss and shape the future of education in Europe, in line with the broader objectives of the Council of Europe and contributing to sustainable development. The session is expected to bring together policy makers, education experts and stakeholders to work together on the implementation of the new strategic vision.

The results of the upcoming session are eagerly awaited, as they will set the course for educational reforms and initiatives across the continent. The programme not only underlines the Council's commitment to democratic principles, but also sets a new standard for education in an increasingly complex and digital world.
