EduTalks@Council of Europe: Discover the pedagogical potential of video games for developing digital citizenship

Children, teenagers and young people live in a world profoundly influenced by technology and digital media. It has now become nearly impossible to avoid using mobile phones, tablets, laptops, console games and other technologies, whether for educational or entertainment purposes. Video games are an important part of the digital landscape, which has grown rapidly in terms of popularity, relevance and complexity. In addition to entertaining children, video games can also enable them to develop the competences (skills, values, attitudes and knowledge and critical understanding) they need to become digital citizens.

Video game is an extremely complex and multifaceted medium: a deeper analysis of its mechanics and characteristics is necessary to uncover its problematic elements and its risks, but also the opportunities it provides. Developing a video game culture entails understanding the complexity of this medium and the potential benefits and risks associated with it.

The Council of Europe has recently published a guide entitled Video game culture – A map for teachers and parents to raise the awareness of teachers and parents of the complexity of this medium, as well as the potential risks and opportunities that come with it.

Join our upcoming EduTalks@Council of Europe to discover the pedagogical potential of video games for developing digital citizenship.
