Bureau Meeting of the Steering Committee for Education set to address key educational initiatives

The Bureau of the Steering Committee for Education (CDEDU) of the Council of Europe meets today at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg and online.

The meeting is set to cover a comprehensive agenda focusing on various aspects of education policy and strategy of the Council of Europe intergovernmental cooperation.

Key Items on the Agenda include:

  • Education Strategy  2030 “Learners First” and the 26th Session of the Standing Conference of European Ministers of Education: Follow-up discussions on the implementation and impacts of the strategies discussed in the previous session.
  • Renewal of the Civic Mission of Education: This includes a review report on the implementation of the Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture (RFCDC), discussions on the launch of the preparatory work on establishing a European Space for Citizenship Education, and updates on vocational education, education for sustainable development.
  • Higher Education: Deliberations on the democratic mission of higher education and the participation of the Council of Europe in the European Higher Education Area, including discussions on the European Qualifications Passport for Refugees.
  • Digital Transformation and E-Learning: Topics like the draft survey for the review of the implementation of the Digital Citizenship Education (DCE) Recommendation, fundraising for the 2025 DCE Year, and policy tools for teaching and learning with and about AI.
  • History Education: Proposed terms of reference for a subgroup on the teaching of history.
  • Language Education: Discussions on the revised and updated version of the Language Education Policy Profiles.

This meeting is a pivotal event in shaping the educational programme of the intergovernemental cooperation in the field of Education of the Council of Europe, addressing contemporary challenges and setting the course for future educational policies.

The outcomes of CoE education programme are expected to have a significant impact on various aspects of education across member states, reflecting the Council of Europe's commitment to fostering a comprehensive, inclusive, and democratic educational environment.
