Due to its global nature both in thematic and geographical terms, the UN constitutes an “across the board” partner for the Council of Europe.

In particular, the organisations have found synergies in the areas of human rights; accountability, the promotion of social rights, youth participation, the fight against racism, discrimination, xenophobia and intolerance; the fight against terrorism, transnational organised crime, cybercrime, corruption and money laundering; the protection of minorities; the prevention of torture; the fight against trafficking in human beings and violence against women; the protection and promotion of the rights of children; intercultural dialogue; sports and internet governance; among others subjects.

Nurturing this relationship fulfils the mandate given by member states of the Council of Europe in 2023 to promote political dialogue with international organisations and to strengthen global partnerships.

The Council of Europe has observer status at the UN General Assembly, and participates in its work and that of the main committees.

The Council of Europe’s New York Office is responsible for amplifying the organisation’s voice in policy discussions taking place in this framework. It boosts the visibility of the organisation’s invaluable work that provides concrete solutions and drives change in the face of existing and emerging challenges.

In addition to building on the strong relations with the United Nations, the New York Office engages with countries and organisations around the world, looking for ways to strengthen ties with existing partners and to explore avenues for cooperation with new ones.
