Back 17 May - International Day against Homophobia

As delivered by Bjørn Berge, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe

IDAHOT is an occasion to celebrate progress towards LGBTI people’s full enjoyment of their human rights.

And it is an opportunity to take stock of the challenges that remain.

For many people, these rights remain fragile.

Yes, there are families, communities and governments that champion the rights of LGBTI people, and this is good and welcome.

But inequality, stigma, discrimination, persecution and violence still exist in Europe today.

With determination, effort and perseverance, we can dismantle these problems and create a more accepting environment in in its place.

In some cases, laws will need to change.

But often this will also require a change in culture, with open hearts and open minds.

Because every European has the right to live dignity and equality, free from prejudice, and happy just to be who they are.

That remains the goal.

And it is the reason that the Council of Europe is proud to fly the rainbow flag today.
