OHTE’s First Annual Conference: How can History Education help us protect Democracy?

The Observatory on History Teaching in Europe’s first public event is set to take place on 2-3 December 2021.
Expect lively debates on issues that go straight to the heart of the Council of Europe’s work on history education as we learn more on how history teaching can empower and embolden future generations to protect and preserve our democracies.

a

It is difficult if not impossible to have proper, effective, and comprehensive education for democratic culture, without quality history education that is based on the competencies for democratic culture, states the Director for Democratic Participation, Mr Matjaž Gruden.

The debates will range from discussing how history education contributes to a democratic Europe, to the teaching of pandemics and the lessons learned from previous health crises. High level participants include the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Margaritas Schinas Vice President of the European Commission, and world-famous historian Niall Ferguson. Find out more about the speakers on our website and programme.

The event will bring together over 150 participants who will attend both online and in person at the Palais de l’Europe in Strasbourg. Supported by the city of Strasbourg, the Annual Conference will allow representatives from networks, institutions, and organisations in the field of history education to learn more about the Observatory’s mandate, and to connect with other history teaching experts.
