CSW online side event: STEM education as a stepping-stone towards gender transformative climate change policies

The Council of Europe organised an online side event with Italy on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education as a stepping-stone towards gender transformative climate change policies. The event was co-sponsored by Austria, the United Kingdom and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and took place within the framework of Italy’s current Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

It took place on Tuesday, 15 March at 4:30-6:00 p.m. CET/ 11:30 a.m.-1:00 pm EDT and it was livestreamed via BlueJeansEvents/UN TV/ Facebook

This side-event aimed at fostering a broad debate on issues related to the role of gender equality policies and strategies in creating more women-friendly academic careers and research working environments. At the same time, the event focused on the need to support changes of perspective and the need for a gender balance in science, research and innovation. In this respect, the role of men was also considered; men as important actors in decision making in challenging the existing gender-based stereotypes and in affirming their support for women’s contributions to science, innovation and policy solutions. Another axis of the event was the integration of gender equality-related considerations in emerging policy and programming on climate change mitigation and adaptation. The opportunities for leadership and inclusion of women in climate change and environment-related decision-making processes were also highlighted.

The event was opened by the Italian Minister for Equal Opportunities and Family and speakers in the opening session included Ministers from Austria and the United Kingdom, as well as representatives of the Council of Europe and UNESCO.

The panel discussion included international organisations and academia.

The event was addressed to politicians, public servants, ambassadors, diplomats, academia, civil society, youth, journalists.
