Discussion on the recent case law of the European Court of Human Rights within the context of the criminal procedure for lawyers-trainers of the free legal aid system

About 20 experienced lawyers-trainers of the Ukrainian free legal aid (FLA) system took part in a discussion session on the recent case law of the European Court of Human Rights within the context of the criminal procedure. The session was held on 6 October in Kyiv.

The discussion was led by human rights lawyer, expert and trainer, national consultant of the Council of Europe Mr Roman Martynovskyi.

The activity makes part of the constant support of the Council of Europe to the institutionalisation of the training system of the FLA.

The present session followed the training on the training skills for two mixed groups of lawyers-trainers, both experienced and newcomers, and a training on the application of the European Convention on Human Rights in criminal proceedings provided to the lawyers having recently joined the FLA system trainers’ pool. These training activities were conducted in September 2018.

Together, these capacity building endeavours prepared the lawyers-trainers to the training they will be providing to their peers, lawyers having recently joined the FLA. In the nearest future, they will deliver a series of trainings on criminal procedure through the lens of the European Convention on Human Rights for about 500 new FLA lawyers from all over Ukraine.

The capacity building activities are undertaken by the Council of Europe under the Project “Continued Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ukraine” funded by the Danish Government.
