The Training of Trainers (ToT) on the protection and safety of journalists was organised within the joint European Union/Council of Europe action “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Serbia (JUFREX 2)” with the aim to support capacities of the national training institutions in Serbia to develop future trainings for legal professionals and law enforcement members.

The ToT was especially designed for Serbian judges, prosecutors, police officers and lawyers interested to conduct training activities on the protection and safety of journalists.

The purpose of the curriculum on safety of journalists is to enhance the awareness of all relevant actors about the importance of freedom of expression and safety of journalists. Furthermore, it aims to enhance the interpretation of the national legislation in accordance to European standards as well as to enhance the application of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) case-law in the field of safety of journalists.

To ensure high quality and harmonisation of the training activities foreseen within the action and to ensure its sustainability, participants were provided with relevant training on relevant content and methodology developed under JUFREX. The training participants were identified and selected by JUFREX 2 beneficiaries and partners: the Judicial Academy of Republic of Serbia and the Ministry of Interior of Republic of Serbia.

The action on “Freedom of expression and freedom of the media in Serbia (JUFREX 2)” is implemented under the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme „Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022“, aiming to assist Beneficiaries in South-East Europe to comply with the Council of Europe standards and European Union acquis in the framework of the enlargement process, where relevant.
