On 23 and 24 October, the Department for the Execution of Judgments participated online in the international conference “Democracy in Defence: European Legal Framework and Context” held in Lviv. The event brought together representatives of the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry for Veterans’ Affairs, the Military Ombudsperson as well as the members of the judiciary, academia and civil society.
The Department’s first intervention in the session on restrictions on political rights in defence of democratic institutions addressed the enforcement of political rights and the democratic way forward during the war and in the post-war period. The Department’s second intervention on the rights of military personnel focused on effective and independent investigations into deaths during military service, in the context of the Committee of Ministers’ supervision of the Sergey Shevchenko group of cases.
The event was organised by the Supreme Court of Ukraine in co-operation with the Ukrainian Catholic University, the Council of Europe projects “Support to Ukraine in implementation of the Council of Europe standards on the judiciary” and “Rights of Veterans and Personnel of Armed Forces in Ukraine”, and the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine Project “Advancing the Quality of Justice by Empowering the Supreme Court’s Role in Delivering Transparent, Accountable and Inclusive Justice”.
