CM adopts Recommendation on Spain

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has published a new report on the application of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in Spain.

Prepared by a Committee of independent experts that monitors the implementation of the Charter, the report acknowledges the efforts made by the Spanish authorities to protect regional and minority languages, but also examines the shortcomings in this area.

On the basis of this assessment, made after a visit to the country in December 2018, it is recommended that the Spanish authorities take account of all the observations and recommendations made in the report by the Committee of Experts as well as the Recommendation by the Committee of Ministers.

The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages came into force in Spain in 2001.

This report also contains the comments of the Spanish government. To see all of the reports on Spain, please click here.
