Back Co-operation with the United Nations concerning the execution of the European Court's judgments against the Russian Federation

Co-operation with the United Nations concerning the execution of the European Court's judgments against the Russian Federation

This week, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in Russia, Mariana Katzarova, visited Strasbourg, held several meetings, including with the Secretary General and the Department for the Execution of Judgments, and held an exchange of views with the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers.

The execution of judgments of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Russian Federation and contacts with Russian human rights defenders were among the main topics of these meetings.

Despite the fact that Russia was excluded from the Council of Europe in March 2022 and has stopped all communication with the organisation on the execution of ECHR judgments, Russia is still a member of the United Nations and subject to its monitoring procedures. The Department for the Execution of Judgments, is working with the UN bodies to remind Russia of its unconditional legal obligation to implement ECHR judgments.
