Europe’s largest participatory cultural event, the European Heritage Days (EHD), invites millions across the continent to celebrate and protect our shared heritage. Each year, participating countries embrace a theme that connects local activities to a wider European story.
In 2026, the theme is “Heritage at Risk: Revive, Resist, Reimagine”. Our cultural and natural heritage faces unprecedented challenges from climate change, urbanisation, migration, conflict and digitisation. The theme highlights the urgent need to safeguard what is at risk and ensure traditions, languages and historic sites continue to inspire future generations.

Revive encourages bringing endangered traditions, crafts and stories back to life through workshops, festivals and oral history projects. Resist emphasises the resilience of communities standing up against threats to heritage. Reimagine inspires new ways to engage with heritage, digitally, artistically and across borders, to make it meaningful and accessible to all.
The celebrations also focus on intergenerational knowledge, linguistic diversity and regional and minority languages, reinforcing the idea that heritage thrives when communities actively participate in its preservation. Organisers are encouraged to create interactive events, promote volunteering and foster collaborations across Europe.
Heritage is more than relics of the past; it is a storyteller of our collective memory. European Heritage Days 2026 invites all to explore, protect and share heritage at risk, ensuring our cultural legacy remains vibrant and meaningful for generations to come.
