European Anthem
Beethoven's "Ode to Joy", the 4th movement of his 9th symphony was chosen as the European Anthem by the Council of Europe in 1972. The European Community adopted the same music as their own European Anthem in 1986.

- The poem "An die Freude" (Ode to Joy) after which the music is named was composed by the German Poet Friedrich Schiller.
